Music is also an element that’s stolen and exploited in cultural appropriation. Recently, Jamaican dancehall artist Mr. Vegas called out Drake for using samples of reggae music on his new album titled “Views”. Mr. Vegas reportedly accused Drake of stealing music from Caribbean culture without giving credit to reggae artists. Andrew Schulz says cultural appropriation is a broke person’s complaint and says Drake is only one of hip-hop’s biggest rappers that have committed cultural appropriation:
“When it comes to cultural appropriation, I don’t even believe that’s a thing. There’s no such thing as cultural appropriation. […] It’s ‘cool appropriation’. We appropriate what’s cool. Like Wu-Tang Clan appropriated Asian martial arts culture. “
On Mr. Vegas Accusing Drake of Cultural Appropriation:
“It’s always people who have nothing that cry about cultural appropriation. Nobody who makes real money, or has something and gets credit, are going ‘I need my credit for cultural appropriation’. Because they got it already. It’s broke people shit”.
“It’s like people are trying to own something. It’s like when gang members are fighting over territory that they rent”.
On Justin Bieber Being Accused of Cultural Appropriation For Rocking Locs. Justin Subsequently Cut Them Off:
“The idea that dreads are only a Black thing is preposterous. Go watch the movie, Braveheart. Everyone before shampoo [was invented] had dreads. That’s what hair was! When you don’t wash your hair, it turns into dreads! You ever seen White homeless people? What do they have? High-top fades? What do they have? Comb-overs, like my hair? No, they have fucking matted hair!”
