In a bonus clip of this week’s Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta episode, D. Smith sat down with castmate Betty Idol and R&B singer, Keri Hilson to discuss how transitioning from male to female affected her career.
The two-time Grammy nominated producer, songwriter and singer has worked with the likes of Lil Wayne, Andre 3000, Lloyd, Monica, and Katy Perry. When D. Smith started transitioning, she started subtly changing her look, such as growing out her hair and wearing makeup here and there. She labelled herself as an “androgynous” man, so to not scare off her male rapper clientele.
It wasn’t until she transitioned completely to a woman that she noticed a change in how rappers treated her. She tells Betty and Keri that rappers stopped hitting her up directly to ask for beats. Watch below:
D. Smith also sat down with VladTV to discuss the Orlando shootings and other transwomen hating on Caitlyn Jenner. Caitlyn, star of Keeping Up With The Kardashians and I Am Cait, has been accused of misrepresenting the struggle of transwomen. In Caitlyn’s defense, D. Smith says there are also real women who misrepresent women, especially in the music industry. D. Smith calls one woman out in particular, who’s considered “music royalty”. See who she’s talking about on the NEXT PAGE.
