A mother of Waco, Texas is suing her 6th grade daughter’s school after three White boys attempted to lynch the 12 year old during a school trip. The school says it was all an “accident”.
On April 28th, Sandy Rougely’s daughter returned home from an overnight school camping trip with the scar around her neck pictured above. The 12 year old told her morest that on the previous day, she was pushing her classmates on the rope swings during the camping trip.
Someone then took a rope, wrapped it around her neck and dragged her away backwards. As she was being dragged, she looked around at her predominantly White classmates and saw they were all staring as she was being dragged by the rope. No one attempted to help, said the student.
Once those pulling her let go of the rope, it fell to the ground and she was able to get the rope off her neck. She looked back and saw three White boys who had been bullying her earlier on the trip. The three boys were standing around her, and she asked them if they tried to choke her on purpose and they said no.
Live Oak Classical School failed to notify the parents of the incident, but says they interviewed other students and staff present, all of whom say it was an “accident”. Jeremy Counseller, a school trustee, says the student received medical attention the day of the incident:
“[…]The student and some of her classmates were playing with a swing and an attached pull-rope on a field trip”.
“The student received first aid treatment immediately after the accident by a parent chaperon who is also a physician, and she was able to enjoy the remained of the field trip, which lasted through the next day.”
The student says the staff treated her neck injury with petroleum jelly and ibuprofen. Sandy Rougely says she’s still fighting for answers from the school and why they failed to notify her of the incident:
“It looked like somebody had ripped her neck apart and stitched it back together,” the girl’s mother told The Dallas Morning News.
Rougely has since obtained an attorney, Levi McCathern, who represents the Dallas Cowboys and their owner, president and general manager, Jerry Jones. He also represents some of the largest insurance companies in the world in specialty areas of Director & Officer Liability and Employment Law.
McCathern was also nominated by his peers onto the Texas Super Lawyers list, a recognition of the state’s top attorneys. He’s won the title eight times. McCathern and Rougely are suing the private school in a personal injury claim for $2.7 million.
“For Live Oak to bury their head in the sand and chalk this incident up to ‘kids being kids’ is irresponsible but, unfortunately, all too common,” said McCathern. “Their tone-deaf approach reflects an attitude that our client’s injury was not worth investigating or even informing her mother about.”
According to reports, Rougely has since removed her daughter from the private school and arranged so that her daughter can finish out the rest of the year from home.

This makes me so upset, whatever the story is or whatever stories the kids give as a accident why in the world would something like this not told to the parents? This is not just a scratch, I feel it looks guilty and neglectful from the school itself. If this happened to YOUR kids or family member and you weren’t told I bet you would have a different outlook on the situation.

Rope burn? Did the other kids have rope burns around there necks? That makes no sense at all to me. Rope burns around that baby’s neck. If it was tour child would you write it off so easily? BETTER YET if it was a WHITE child would you write it off? Um no?
People are completely screwing up this story. There is absolutely no evidence that it was intentional. An interveiw was connducted of everyone there and everyone said the same thing: she was playing on the rope swing when she got a rope burn. Many other students received rope burns and we’re all treated. Her mother is simply using this for moneyary gain.
Electrode, do you hear yourself? An interview was conducted by whom and that type of accident doesn’t occur from a rope swing….and you always notify the parent in case of an injury. Don’t always think in color.

Excuse me? Did you see her neck? Did you see what she said happened? Do you understand that these boys were already bullying her prior to this happening? Do you understand that this child’s parents were not even contacted after this occurred with a open cut across her entire neck? Oh, oh, I’m sorry none of that matters she is black and all the “witnesses” said it was an accident! Who are these said “witnesses” nobody knows? Emmet Till’s murderer was tried and found not guilty. He admitted to the crime some time afterward. Lynching has been a private affair among the perpetrators. Its Understandable that the other kids got rope burns but did they receive them on their necks? Did the students who were accidentally hanging the girl not notice she was dangling? I find it hard to believe that three people accidentally hung someone. I’m not saying that they all did it on purpose but I am saying that all 3 werent confused as to what happened. If you are aware of history regarding private education, bullying is not uncommon and tends to be more severe than at public schools for one reason or another.
But like the child got injured which is what is most important and the serious issue here. Who cares if it’s about money anyway. If my child had that rope burn I would immediately send home school them or send them to a other school. She’s just doing what she thinks if best. Anyway, just because everyone says agrees on something doesn’t make it true. There is no evidence that it wasn’t intentional or if it was.
