On why Kelis has waited so til now to speak out:
“In all honesty I was afraid to. Because of my faith and my belief in God and my Creator, I know that I could never fight him as ruthlessly as he would fight me.”
As an example of just how ruthless Nas is, Kelis described the time Nas had their son and Nas wouldn’t let Knight return early to see Kelis’s mother, who had just suffered a stroke that day:
“My mother had a stroke on a Saturday. She was here in L.A. So, that was terrifying. Knight was with his father the day that my mom had a stroke. So, I called [Nas]. I was like ‘yo, my mom just had a stroke. Can you bring [Knight]?’ And he said no.”
Thanksgiving rolls around and Kelis’s mother is out of the hospital and Knight wants his father at Thanksgiving. Kelis said Nas has no family and can’t cook so at her son’s request, she asked Nas if he’d like to visit for Thanksgiving. Nas joins Kelis and her family for Thanksgiving.
Days later, she found out Nas filed for full custody, citing Kelis didn’t allow Nas around Knight as the reason.
Knight was actually with Nas when she found out, as Kelis was on vacation with her husband, celebrating their anniversary.
“I get 8 grand a month”, says Kelis on their recent agreement. “It doesn’t really cover everything, but I have never, ever, ever, ever asked that man for a penny. If the 8 grand comes, thank you. If it doesn’t, we’ll be fine. I make my own money.”
Kelis also confirmed the relationship between Nas and Nicki was not a publicity stunt. It was real.
