How fickle the entertainment industry can be. While Gabby Douglas should be celebrated for breaking records and barriers in the world of sports, she’s become the target of hate online, being criticized on everything from her looks to how loud she cheers for her teammates.
Some may think Gabby is too busy to be troubled by the chatter of internet trolls, but for Gabby that chatter became louder than the chants of her name at the Olympics. Both she and her mother were forced to address the disgusting comments made about Gabby online.
In an interview with Reuters, Gabby’s mother, Natalie Hawkins discussed how this year’s Olympics competition affected her daughter, saying she’s “heartbroken” by the experience:
“She’s had to deal with people criticizing her hair, or people accusing her of bleaching her skin. They said she had breast enhancements, they said she wasn’t smiling enough, she’s unpatriotic. Then it went to not supporting her team mates. Now you’re ‘Crabby Gabby'”.
“You name it and she got trampled. What did she ever do to anyone?”
