Judge Aaron Persky, the judge who gave former Stanford University student athlete Brock Turner a measly 6 months for three felony sexual assault convictions is in the headlines again. He just sentenced another man, Raul Ramirez, to 3 years for the same crime.
Ramirez, a 32 year old immigrant from El Salvador, sexually assaulted his female roommate. Both Brock Turner and Raul Ramirez had no criminal record prior to being convicted. Both of their victims were assaulted in a similar manner, but unlike Turner, Ramirez admitted to the assault. Ramierz told officers he “knew what he did was wrong and he wanted to say sorry.”
However, when two students caught Brock Turner on top of the unconscious woman he took off running. When questioned by police, Turner claimed it was consensual sex. Bail for Ramirez was set at $200,000, which is higher than the $150,000 bail set for Turner.
And if you didn’t know, Judge Persky was also a student athlete at Stanford University, like Turner. Turner was kicked off the university’s swim team after the news broke of his conviction. According to Judge Persky, a longer jail sentence would’ve had “a severe impact” on Turner, so he opted to give Turner 6 months, with a possibility of getting out in 3 months.
Petitions have been launched, one led by a Stanford University student, to get Judge Aaron Persky removed from the bench.
White privilege at its finest.
