WWE Legend Joanie “Chyna” Laurer was found dead in her Redondo Beach, CA apartment by a friend after Chyna failed to answer her phone the last several days.
The friend found Chyna unresponsive in her bedroom and called 911 around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night. The police are investigating the death of the former pro-wrestler as a possible drug overdose, given her history with substance abuse and her recent prescription to medication for anxiety and sleep deprivation. Chyna was 45.
Chyna joined the WWE in 1997, initially working as Triple H’s bodyguard before becoming a performer herself. She was part of D-Generation X and broke records as the first woman to enter the Royal Rumble match, the King of the Ring tournament, and the first woman to win the Intercontinental title. After leaving the WWE in 2007, she continued to work in the TNA and in New Japan Pro Wrestling in 2011.
